چکیده

Soil was treated with "C-ring-labeled fluometuron [N,N-dimethyl-N'[3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyll urea] (0.516 and 5.16 pmol gl), air-dried, and stored for 6 months at 5 "C. The 14C was then extracted from soil with methanol by conventional extraction (twice with MeOH/H20 8020 v/v; 2:l extract/soil v/w) and with CO2 using a supercritical fluid extractor. Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) method development included adding modifiers and varying C02 fluid density, extraction temperature, sample mass, and extraction time. Adding H2O to modify the sample was the single most effective variable which improved recovery. Extraction temperatures above 50 "C lowered recovery, presumably because of thermal instability of fluometuron. The optimum C02 density at 50 "C was 0.80 g mL-l. Static extraction times greater than 6 min and dynamic extraction times greater than 18 min did not significantly improve recovery. Recovery using optimum SFE conditions was comparable to that obtained using conventional methods. Extraction of aged field samples indicated that this technology can also be used to extract some common fluometuron metabolites.

Influence of watershed system management on herbicide concentrations in Mississippi Delta oxbow lakes.

The Mississippi Delta Management Systems Evaluation Area (MD-MSEA) project was established in 1994 in three small watersheds (202 to 1,497 ha) that drain into oxbow lakes (Beasley, Deep Hollow, and Thighman). The primary research objective was to assess the implications of management practices on water quality. Monthly monitoring of herbicide concentrations in lake water was conducted from 2000...

Interactions of tillage and soil depth on ̄uometuron degradation in a Dundee silt loam soil

Fluometuron (N,N-dimethyl-N0-[3-(tri ̄uoromethyl)phenyl]urea) is the most widely used soil applied herbicide in cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) production in the Southeastern United States. Thus, there is a need to understand the persistence of this herbicide under various crop management systems in regards to both herbicide ef®ciency and environmental fate. The effects of long-term no-tillage pract...

Laboratory assessment of atrazine and fluometuron degradation in soils from a constructed wetland.

Constructed wetlands offer promise for removal of nonpoint source contaminants such as herbicides from agricultural runoff. Laboratory studies assessed the potential of soils to degrade and sorb atrazine and fluometuron within a recently constructed wetland. The surface 3 cm of soil was sampled from two cells of a Mississippi Delta constructed wetland; one shallow area disturbed only hydrologic...

Effect of olive-mill waste addition to soil on sorption, persistence, and mobility of herbicides used in Mediterranean olive groves.

Laboratory and field experiments were conducted to evaluate the effect of olive-mill waste (OMW) addition to a Mediterranean olive grove soil on sorption, persistence, and mobility of two herbicides which are simultaneously applied for weed control in olive groves: terbuthylazine (TA) and fluometuron (FM). Laboratory batch sorption experiments showed that OMW addition to the soil at rates of 5 ...

Comparative sorption and leaching study of the herbicides fluometuron and 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxyacetic acid (MCPA) in a soil amended with biochars and other sorbents.

Biochar, the solid residual remaining after the thermochemical transformation of biomass for carbon sequestration, has been proposed to be used as a soil amendment, because of its agronomic benefits. The effect of amending soil with six biochars made from different feedstocks on the sorption and leaching of fluometuron and 4-chloro-2-methylphenoxyacetic acid (MCPA) was compared to the effect of...
